A Fond Almost Goodbye to My Precious

Years ago, after I bought my first 'expensive' coffee grinder (at the time I thought it would be the most expensive piece of coffee equipment I would have to purchase but boy was I wrong) I got the simplest and best looking small espresso maker I found, the Mypressi Twist.

One of the people to convince me this was the right thing to do is Sarah Dooley in this short video clip:

(see also: her short feature about milk

I enjoyed some fine espresso's with the device. When the dose and grind were good and I got the routine of pre-heating the dome right, a rich maybe somewhat underextracted but lavish espresso would be the result with ample crema, maybe caused in part by the gas concentration that builds up the extraction pressure.

These are some of the shots I pulled with the Mypressi:

Later, the company seemed to be out of business, back online again, a new version of the Mypressi came out that had some improvements and then existing Mypressi's could be sent in to be refurbished even though new products could not be ordered for lack of parts. Cat at Seattle Coffee Gear thought the company was out of business because they never heard back from enquiries and they gave up. At the same time I did get back emails from the company, although Sarah Dooley had by then moved on to other places, like La Marzocco where she talks about the "warm, cozy and fuzzy" atmosphere on the creaking wooden floor, the pure nostalgia of Starbucks across from the Seattle Pike Place Market:

Meanwhile, I collected a number of La Pavoni's, more grinders, a Rocket E61 machine and a LONDINIUM I lever machine so the Mypressi was mostly just lying around and looking pretty while doing nothing at all anymore.

This week, in passing, I noticed that the Mypressi had shed half of its body armor:

Mypressi gone half naked
I assumed this was a goodbye to my first little espresso maker. I gave it away, thanking Mypressi for this very affordable and good looking introduction into the world of fine espresso.

PS 4 April 2018 I again bought a second hand Mypressi (see below) and then later I got a brand new red one from the USA, and I even have a mint black one just to be sure ;-)

A friend writes me:
"As for knuckles, I loved the imagery. Perhaps an explosive device could make both espresso and Pho, the Vietnamese/Chinese soup make from pig/beef knuckles."

On the LONDINIUM forum, mr. Dan Staight pointed to this link:
http://www.quora.com/Mypressi/What-happened-to-mypressi

"Espressi (the company behind the mypressi brand) was launched on the predicate of making multiple products targeting the high-end of espresso to prove the technology and then working downstream into broader markets with a range of products that target different price points and bring innovative and disruptive products to all aspects of the coffee industry. The roadmap included systems that work with the capsules from Nespresso and Keurig. Lack of funding and revenue prevented it from getting there.

The TWIST had fanatical support from espresso aficionados including many professionals and WBC championship winners, and our retail launch partner was the eponymous Intelligentsia. But high-end does not a market make for a $149 product. Maybe it should have been $600. Despite winning product of the year from the SCAA there were insufficient conversions from the industry. I can go into almost any good cafe in the world and the barista knows the mypressi TWIST. They've heard of it, or know someone who has one, or they saw one somewhere else. But they didn't buy it. We did also work on the mass market through numerous channels from Neiman Marcus to Macys to Williams Sonoma to ShopNBC, and also in some 30 countries. Hammacher Schlemmer, the biggest catalog in the US with about 3 million distribution featured the TWIST on its cover but the conversion rate was only 0.001% (skipping the maths--that's about 300 units). It's an unfortunate reality that a $149 product that produces espresso that experts rated as the equivalent of a $14,000 product could not win more customers despite huge mainstream press (NYT, Martha Stewart, Wired, Popular Mechanics and many many more) and noteworthy awards and support from industry insiders. If I counted the emails I've received complaining that $149 is too high a price, I suspect they would far exceed those who thought it fabulous a $149 machine could produce such good espresso.

So to sum it all up, the high end of the coffee market couldn't provide sufficient sales to support the product at that price point, and I couldn't close the the funding to build the downstream products that were targeted at the middle market. Espressi became a victim of cashflow causality.

However, as the IP is intact, and the roadmap is solid, I do expect to be able to launch the new product range in the future, along with a mypressi TWIST v3.

Hoi Frans,

Groet, Frans
